The Printmaking Council is proud of the involvement of artist Sally Spofford as the juror for this exhibition. A long immersion in the art of the Maya was Sally's gateway into the iconography of other and older civilizations. During the search for archetypes her head became jammed with fragments and details. Eventually insights began to lead to assimilation and fusion. Sally feels that our culture seems cut off from its past without myths or heroes. Her fascination with history and other cultures has taken her on a search for beginnings, essences, and links to contemporary culture. MYTHS & MARKS features works that respond to these ideas and universal questions such as, who are we and how did we get here? Sally Spofford graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College and also studied at the Art Students League with Bernard Klonis and George Grosz and at the China Institute with Ya-Chun Wang. Her paintings and sculpture are in the collections of the New Jersey State Museum, Newark Museum, Morris Museum and Hunterdon Art Museum, as well as many corporate and private collections.
